Missä minun kynä on? Where is my pen?

Missa (where):
Pekka on tyossä (työ - job). Pekka is at work.
Liisa on kurssilla (kurssi). Lisa is in class.

Mistä (when):
Pekka tulee työsta (työ - job) kello 18. Pekka will work at 6pm
Liisa tulee kursilla (kurssi) kello 18. Liisa will have class at 6pm.

Kirjat ovat repussa (reppu). The books are in the backpack.

Rule: If an object is concretely inside another object then you use -ssa / -ssä. For example repussa from reppu which is backpack.

(Mistä) Otan kirjat repusta (reppu). I will get the books from the backpack.

When an object is on a surface then you use -lla / -llä.
Kirjat ovat pöydällä (pöytä - table). The books are on the table.
Kirjat ovat lattialla (lattia - floor). The books are on the floor.

(Mistä) Otan kirjat lattialta. I’ll get the books from the floor.
(Mistä) Otan kirjat pöydältä. I’ll get the books from the table.

Olla kotoisin. Where are you from.

Mistä maasta (country) olet kotoisin? What country are you from?
Mistä maasta (country) tulet? What country are you from?
Mistä kaupungista (city) olet kotoisin? What city are you from?
Mistä kaupungista (city) tulet? What city are you from?
Country (maa):
