KPT Changes

When conjugating words, some elements change, these are called KPT changes which are:

Vahva (Strong)	Heikko (weak)

nk	ng
nt	nn
rt	rr
lt	ll
mp	mm

There are no KPT changes if you encounter:

Öö + s

Uy + s

-ut

-yt

-nen

If the word ends with -e, -as, -in then the KPT changes are the other way around; tt: t, t:tt osoite = osoitteet

Some words don’t have KPT changes, for example:

Auto (car): autot (cars)

Muki (mug): mukit (mugs)

KPT Changes according to verb type:

Verbityyppi 1 (Verb Type 1)

Infinitiivi: vahva (strong)

These verbs infinitive is strong. The changes in KPT are like this:

Verbityyppi 2 (Verb Type 2)

Infinitiivi: -da / -dä

These verbs infinitive end with either -da or -dä.

There are no KPT changes on this verb type.

Verbityyppi 3 (Verb Type 3)

Infinitiivi -lla (heikko)

In this verb type all change for the strong. So there are always KPT changes when the infinitive is weak (heikko).

Verbityyppi 4 (Verb Type 4)

All are strong.

Verbityyppi 5 (Verb Type 5)

No KPT changes.

Nukkua

Nuku hyvin! (Sleep well) (imperativi yksikko (singular imperative)) (minä) nuku(n)

The singular is done from the minä form.

Nukku(a) + kaa: Nukkukaa hyvin! (Imperativi monikko (plural imperative))

The plurarl imperative is done from the basic form + -kaa

Ottaa (Take)

Ota taksi! (singular)

Ottakaa taksi! (plural)

Take a taxi!

-lle (to a person)

Soita Pekalle (Pekka) (I call Pekka)

First names change KPT if they have kk:k, pp:p or tt:t only.

Soitan Artolle (Arto) I call Arto.

Soitan Outille (Outi). I call Outi.
