Finnish Language - Lesson 20: Types of verbs

VERBITYYPPI - TYPES OF VERBS:

There are five types of verbs.

Type 1:
Type 1 is the most common and has two vowels at the end of the form. The conjugation will be as follows:


Minä
-n
Sinä
-t
Hän
-vokaali (the last vowel)
Me
-mme
Te
-tte
He
-vat / -vät


Type 2:
Type 2 of verbs are the ones where the infinitive form (this is the form you find in the dictionary) ends with -da or -dä. For example “syödä”, which means “to eat”.
For these verbs the conjugation is as follows:


Minä
-n
Sinä
-t
Hän
(no vowel added)
Me
-mme
Te
-tte
He
-vat / -vät



Type 3:
Types 3 verbs are the ones that in their infinitive form end with -la / -lä, -na / -nä, -sta / -stä. In this last case you only remove -ta / -tä even though the ending includes the “s”. These verbs are conjugated as follows:
You use the stem of the word, add and “e” and then the ending.

Type 4:
The type 4 verbs are the ones where the infinitive form ends with -ata / -ätä, -ota / -ötä, -uta / -ytä. These verbs are conjugated as follows:

You take the stem of the verb add and a or ä ( in connection with the vowel harmony) and then the ending.

Type 5:
The fifth type of verbs are the ones that end in -ita / -itä. You conjugates those as follows:
You take the stem of the verb add -tse- and then the ending.
